CS 1.6 Grenades — HE, Flash, Smoke Explained

Every grenade in Counter-Strike 1.6 — damage radius, flash timing, smoke duration, throw mechanics and how the pros use them.

Three grenades. That's the whole utility budget in Counter-Strike 1.6. But those three grenades — HE, Flashbang, Smoke — are what separate casual servers from competitive play. Every important CS 1.6 execute (bombsite takes, retakes, chokepoint holds) is a coordinated sequence of grenades.

You can carry one HE, one Smoke, and up to two Flashbangs simultaneously. Total grenade slots: 4.

HE Grenade (High Explosive)

  • Real device: M67 fragmentation grenade
  • Price: $300
  • Fuse: ~1.5 seconds after leaving your hand
  • Damage: ~85 at ground zero, falling off to 0 at ~4 metres
  • Radius: ~7 metres of noticeable damage

The HE is the only grenade that damages enemies. A perfect throw into a stationary enemy will drop them to ~15 HP (or kill outright if they're already wounded). Two HEs at once can wipe a whole team through a doorway.

Real damage output

Against a fresh 100 HP enemy with no armor:

  • Direct impact / ground zero: ~85 damage → 15 HP left
  • Within 2 metres: ~50 damage
  • Within 4 metres: ~15-25 damage

Against kevlar armor, the numbers roughly halve. HE is dramatically less effective against a full-armor rifleman than an eco player.

Classic HE lineups

Every map has established "nade spots" — a spot on the ground where standing and throwing left-mouse-jump-throw sends the grenade to a specific killspot on the enemy side of the map.

  • de_dust2 — CT spawn throw to Long A doors, or T spawn throw over Long A crates
  • de_inferno — banana pop-flash + HE combo on the CT/T banana push
  • de_nuke — HE through the vents into the T-side lobby

These lineups are memorised by competitive players. On casual servers, most HE throws are just "aim at doorway, cook 1 second, throw".

Flashbang (Stun Grenade)

  • Real device: M84 stun grenade
  • Price: $200 each (carry up to 2)
  • Fuse: ~1.7 seconds after leaving your hand
  • Effect: Full-white flash for 3-4 seconds if looking directly at it; partial flash if peripheral

Flashbangs blind. That's the entire mechanic — but the duration and angle create enormous tactical depth.

Flash mechanics

The flash effect is directional:

  • Looking at the flashbang when it detonates: full-white screen for ~3.5 seconds, then a fading haze for another 2 seconds
  • Looking 45° off: ~1.5 second white, faster fade
  • Looking 90° off (grenade behind you): brief screen tint, no meaningful blind
  • Muted audio while flashed — your enemies also can't easily hear footsteps

Flash-through-wall

Flashbangs bounce off walls. They also affect enemies through thin walls — the flash effect ignores wall geometry. This is why "pop-flashes" work: throw the flash at the ceiling above a chokepoint, it bounces and detonates on the other side of a corner, blinding everyone hiding there.

Pop-flash technique

The most-used flash tactic in CS 1.6:

  1. Line up a throw where the flash will detonate the exact frame it comes into enemy view
  2. Aim slightly high — the grenade travels in an arc
  3. Left-click + jump + throw
  4. Teammate rushes the second the flash detonates

Executed correctly, defenders literally can't shoot back because they were looking at the choke, and the flash detonated inside their view cone. The attacker rushes freely.

Smoke Grenade

  • Real device: AN-M8 HC white smoke
  • Price: $300
  • Fuse: ~1 second after impact (starts to bloom on hitting a surface)
  • Duration: ~15 seconds of full coverage, then fades over ~5 seconds
  • Radius: ~5 metres of full opacity

Smokes block line of sight. That's the entire tactic. But since CS 1.6 has NO player-outline through smoke (unlike some newer shooters), a well-placed smoke completely denies angles.

Smokes in bombsite takes

Every competitive bombsite execute uses 1-3 smokes to block off:

  • Angles the AWPer would hold
  • Rotational paths from the second bombsite
  • Long-range rifle sightlines

Example: on de_dust2 A-site takes, Ts typically smoke CT spawn (blocking the rotation from B), Cross (blocking the CT AWPer's angle from behind), and sometimes Goose (blocking the position CTs sneak into).

Shooting through smoke

Bullets pass through smoke without loss. You can and will die shooting blind into a smoke — the trick is to listen. If the enemy fires or steps inside the smoke, your ears tell you exactly where to aim.

Advanced players "smoke-tap" — fire single shots blindly through the smoke to bait the enemy into panicking. Almost never kills, occasionally lucky.

Throwing mechanics

Every grenade has three throw modes controlled by your mouse buttons:

  1. Left-click — full throw, longest distance
  2. Right-click — underhand toss, medium distance
  3. Both simultaneously — soft drop, right at your feet (used for flashing yourself out of a corner)

Combine throw modes with jumping, crouching and strafing and you get an infinite variety of nade lineups. Serious players spend hours in bot_add empty servers memorising throws.

Grenade buy order

Standard full-buy grenade purchase priority:

  1. 1 Flashbang — $200 (minimum utility for any execute)
  2. 1 Smoke — $300 (denies an angle every buy round)
  3. 1 HE — $300 (finishes wounded enemies)
  4. 2nd Flashbang — $200 (for the actual flash-and-push sequence)

Total: $1,000 for full utility. On a $16,000 max-cash buy round you can absolutely afford this. On semi-eco rounds, drop the HE first, then the smoke.

Team utility coordination

Elite CS 1.6 teams spread utility across roles:

  • Entry fragger — 2 flashes (pop-flashes as they push)
  • Support — smokes (blocking angles for the entry)
  • Lurker — HE (killing wounded enemies caught out of position)
  • AWPer — usually 1 flash + kevlar/helmet only (money-conscious)

A team throwing 4 smokes + 6 flashes + 3 HEs on a coordinated bombsite take is nearly impossible to defend against without matching utility. Which is why utility economy is nearly as important as weapon economy.
