Counter-Strike 1.6 Community Modes — Overview
Zombie Plague, JailBreak, Surf, KZ, Deathrun and every other community-made mode on Counter-Strike 1.6. Server-side AMX Mod X plugins that keep the game alive.
Updated: 2026-07-30
Counter-Strike 1.6's community modes are the reason the game still has thousands of daily players 20+ years after release. Each mode is a server-side AMX Mod X plugin overlaying the base game with new mechanics. Any non-Steam client can join any modded server without extra installs.
This page introduces the ecosystem. Deep dives on each specific mode are linked at the bottom.
The tech stack
Every community mode below runs on the same infrastructure:
| Layer | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Metamod-p | GoldSrc-level plugin loader — hooks into the HLDS server binary |
| AMX Mod X (AMXX) | The Pawn scripting engine 90%+ of modes run on |
| ReHLDS / ReGameDLL / ReAPI | Modernised replacements for Valve's HLDS binaries |
Everything is server-side only. Your client doesn't know anything about the mode until it joins the server. This is why non-Steam CS 1.6 has such a diverse mode ecosystem — one client, thousands of different gameplay experiences.
The 8 top modes
CSDM Deathmatch
Instant respawn, no rounds, weapon menu. The most-populated non-classic mode. Written by BAILOPAN (also the creator of AMX Mod X itself). Warm-up for pros, casual paradise for everyone else.
Zombie Plague
The single biggest community mode family. One player randomly infected each round, humans buy weapons and barricade, zombies win by converting everyone. 5,000+ community maps, active every day.
Zombie Escape
Cooperative zombie variant. Instead of barricading, humans race through multi-stage maps to reach an escape point (helicopter, boat, spaceship). Includes some of the most elaborate maps in Counter-Strike history.
JailBreak
Roleplay-lite. CTs are prison guards, Ts are prisoners. Warden gives orders over voice, mini-games fill the round, last surviving prisoner picks a 1v1 duel (Last Request). Massive scene in EU/CIS.
Surf
A physics-exploit turned competitive discipline. 30-60° ramps + sv_airaccelerate 100 = 3000+ units/sec of pure momentum. Both a combat variant and a pure-skill (timed) variant exist.
KZ and Bhop
Movement disciplines. KZ = timed jump puzzles with long jumps, edge jumps, duck jumps. Bhop = continuous jumping preserving velocity via air-strafe. Both have their own world-record ladders (Xtreme-Jumps, kreedz.com).
Deathrun
One player controls traps at the end of a corridor; runners race through dodging traps to reach the end. Fast rounds (2-4 minutes), big personality factor for the trap master. Perfect for small servers.
GunGame
Kill someone → auto-promote to next weapon on a fixed 30-level ladder. First to knife-kill wins. No economy, no rounds, no buy menu. Great for practising every weapon in the arsenal.
Other modes worth mentioning
Beyond the top 8, the community has produced dozens more:
- Warcraft 3 mod (War3FT) — WoW/W3 races and abilities on top of CS 1.6
- Superhero Mod — pick a superhero with a passive/active power (Batman, Superman, Flash)
- Call of Duty mod (CoD MW) — ranks + perks + kill streaks
- Base Builder — barricade defense with props, survive zombies
- Trikz — team-based KZ where players boost each other
- HideNSeek (HNS) — CTs chase Ts on open maps with a countdown
- PropHunt — hide as map props (small scene compared to CS:S/CS:GO)
- Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT) — traitors vs innocents; smaller CS 1.6 scene than the Garry's Mod version
Where to find these servers
Any non-Steam CS 1.6 client shows all modded servers in the master server list. Filter by:
- Game type — some plugins report the mode name
- Player count — populated servers are usually running popular modes
- Map prefix —
zm_*= Zombie Mod,ze_*= Zombie Escape,jail_*= JailBreak,surf_*= Surf,kz_*= KZ,bhop_*= Bhop,deathrun_*= Deathrun
