CS 1.6 Economy Guide — How Money Works

Kill bonuses, round wins, eco rounds, force buys, and the $16,000 cap. The full CS 1.6 economy explained with real numbers.

Updated: 2026-07-30

Counter-Strike 1.6 is a five-versus-five economy game as much as it's a shooter. Miss a full-buy round and you're eco for two rounds. Win pistol round and you're rich for four rounds. This guide covers the exact numbers.

Everyone starts a match with $800. Everyone caps at $16,000 (Wikipedia). Everything in between is decisions.

The base rewards

Confirmed from the Half-Life: Counter-Strike Manual (Valve 2000) and Wikipedia:

Event Reward
Round win $3,500
Round loss $1,500 (base — see loss bonus below)
Enemy kill $300
Teammate kill -$300 (deducted)
Hostage kill -$1,500 (deducted)
Round starting money (round 1) $800
Round starting money (halftime) $800
Money cap $16,000

Kill-with-knife bonus (some servers)

On certain server configs, killing with the knife awards $1,500 instead of $300. This is a server variable (mp_knife_bonus) — not on all servers. If it's on, it lets you eco-round-win and refill your economy in one round.

The loss bonus (the whole reason eco rounds work)

If you lose multiple rounds in a row, the loss bonus scales up:

Consecutive losses Loss bonus
1 $1,500
2 $2,000
3 $2,500
4+ $3,000 (max)

Winning a round resets the counter to zero.

Practical consequence: losing three rounds in a row nets you $2,500 + $2,500 + $2,500 = $7,500 from losses alone, on top of any kill bonuses. That's why eco-round strategy exists — you might not win the round, but you're stacking cash for a proper buy in round 4.

Objective bonuses

Event Bonus
Bomb plant (any T) +$800 per T (only if bomb explodes or Ts win)
Bomb defuse +$300 to the defuser
Hostage rescue +$150 per hostage (varies by server)
VIP escape (as_ maps) +$3,500 to VIP

The economic rounds

Every round in competitive CS 1.6 falls into one of four categories:

Full buy

  • Everyone has $4,000+
  • Standard purchases: rifle + kevlar + helmet + full nades
  • T side: AK + kevlar/helmet + 1 flash + 1 smoke + HE ≈ $4,200
  • CT side: M4 + kevlar/helmet + defuse kit + full nades ≈ $4,850

Force buy

  • Round after losing a full-buy round; economy is $1,500-$3,500
  • Team decides "we can't afford proper, but we can't eco three rounds in a row either"
  • Buys anything shootable — MP5, Galil, Deagle + kevlar
  • High variance — sometimes wins, often loses. But even losing a force builds another $2,000 loss bonus.

Semi-eco / anti-eco

  • One or two players buy rifles, the rest save
  • The one buyer plays a defensive spot expecting the enemy to force-buy too
  • Common on round 3 after losing pistol + gun round

Full eco (save round)

  • Everyone keeps pistols, maybe buys kevlar only
  • Goal: stack money for a guaranteed full buy next round
  • Playbook: rush together with pistols hoping to steal a round via surprise, or split up and try to kill enemies for the $300 kill bonus, banking their dropped weapons

Money-flow example

A typical opening 6 rounds after losing pistol round:

Round Result Bonus received Total at round end
1 (pistol) Lose (played kevlar+P228, died) $1,500 + $600 kills $800 - $1,250 + $2,100 = $1,650
2 (eco) Lose (rushed with pistols) $2,000 + $300 kill $1,650 + $2,300 = $3,950
3 (semi-force) Lose (bought MP5+kevlar, still not enough) $2,500 + $600 kills $3,950 - $2,150 + $3,100 = $4,900
4 (full buy) Win (finally geared up) $3,500 + $900 kills $4,900 - $4,200 + $4,400 = $5,100
5 Win $3,500 + kills ~$8,000
6 Full buy again ready back to $4,000+

Losing three in a row and then winning one round is the entire foundation of "eco-round strategy". You're never actually broke unless you keep losing after the loss bonus caps.

Pistol-round math (why round 1 matters)

Pistol round win → 5 CTs at $3,500 + $800 base = $4,300 each entering round 2.

Pistol round loss → 5 CTs at $1,500 loss + $800 base = $2,300 each entering round 2.

Neither is enough for full buy in round 2, but the winning team can push $2,300 into an M4 anti-eco while losers scramble. The pistol round is worth roughly 1.5 round-wins in economic value.

Buy-menu keybinds

The buy menu is opened with B by default. You can bind direct-buy commands to any key for instant purchases:

bind "F1" "buy;ak47"
bind "F2" "buy;m4a1"
bind "F3" "buy;awp"
bind "F4" "buyequip;vesthelm"
bind "F5" "buyequip;defuser"
bind "F6" "buy;deagle"
bind "F7" "buyammo1"

Console commands like ak47, m4a1, awp are aliases for the buy menu. See CS 1.6 Console Commands for the full list.

Money-management rules of thumb

  1. Never carry over $16,000 — you're wasting income. Buy nades for a teammate.
  2. Communicate before buying — a solo Deagle + kevlar while your team is full-buying is wasted money.
  3. Save with your team, not against it — if 4 players are eco and 1 buys a rifle, the rifle dies alone.
  4. After a lost force, always full-eco — don't chain-force twice, you'll be broke for the rest of the half.
  5. Drop for your AWPer — dropping a $4,750 AWP to a struggling teammate is more efficient than each teammate buying $2,500 rifles.
