Counter-Strike 1.6 Gameplay — Rounds, Teams & Objectives

How Counter-Strike 1.6 rounds work — objectives (defusal, hostage, VIP), teams, movement, economy and the classic 5v5 round structure.

Updated: 2026-07-30

Counter-Strike 1.6 is a round-based 5v5 tactical shooter. Two teams — Terrorists (T) and Counter-Terrorists (CT) — fight to complete map-specific objectives. There's no respawn during a round. When you die, you spectate until the round ends and the next one starts.

This page covers the fundamentals. Deep dives on specific gameplay systems are linked at the bottom.

Teams

  • Counter-Terrorists (CT) — spawn with a USP-45 pistol and $800 for the pistol round. Elite counter-terrorist units.
  • Terrorists (T) — spawn with a Glock-18 pistol and $800. Named after various real-world armed groups.

Both teams have 4 player models each and are otherwise identical mechanically. Teams swap after 15 rounds (halftime); first to 16 rounds wins the match ("MR15" — Max Rounds 15).

Three objective types

Every CS 1.6 map has one of three round objectives, indicated by the map's prefix:

de_ — Bomb defusal

  • Terrorists carry a C4 bomb. They must plant it at bombsite A or B and let it explode.
  • Counter-Terrorists must defuse the bomb within 10 seconds (5 seconds with a Defuse Kit).
  • Round timer: 1:55 by default.
  • Team elimination also wins the round for that team.
  • 90% of modern servers run this format. Iconic maps: de_dust2, de_inferno, de_nuke. See the Maps List.

cs_ — Hostage rescue

  • Terrorists guard four hostages at their base.
  • Counter-Terrorists must escort hostages to a rescue zone. CTs win by extracting hostages OR eliminating all Ts.
  • Terrorists win if they eliminate all CTs before rescue.
  • Popular casual mode. Iconic maps: cs_office, cs_italy, cs_assault.

as_ — VIP assassination

  • One CT is randomly designated VIP — 200 armor, 150% movement speed, but only a USP and can't pick up other weapons.
  • CTs must escort the VIP to an extraction point. Ts must kill the VIP.
  • Largely deprecated. Only one widely-played map: as_oilrig.

Round structure

Every round follows the same 4-phase pattern:

  1. Freeze phase (5 seconds) — you can walk and buy weapons but can't shoot or leave your spawn area.
  2. Buy phase (15 seconds) — you can leave spawn and continue buying. Once you leave the buy zone, you can't buy again this round.
  3. Play phase — the actual round. Duration depends on map (1:55 for de maps, 2:15 for cs maps).
  4. Post-round (5 seconds) — round result shown, next round starts.

Economy — how money works

You earn money by winning rounds ($3,500), losing rounds ($1,500 base, scaling to $3,000 on loss streaks), killing enemies ($300), and completing objectives (planting bomb: +$800, defusing: +$300, rescuing hostage: +$150 each).

The economy cap is $16,000. Starting money is $800. The full CS 1.6 Economy Guide has every buy strategy, force-buy math, and pistol-round breakdown.

Movement

  • Base run speed: 250 units/sec (with knife or free hand)
  • With AWP: 210 units/sec (biggest movement penalty)
  • With M4A1: 230 units/sec
  • With AK-47: 221 units/sec

Movement matters — first-shot accuracy is 100% only when standing still. Move mid-spray and every shot after the first spreads. The movement disciplines KZ and Bhop turn these mechanics into their own competitive scene.

The setup layer

Getting the game to feel right requires tuning:

  • Console Commands — netcode (cl_cmdrate 101), FPS (fps_max 101), mouse settings (m_rawinput 1), buy binds
  • System Requirements — the game runs on anything, but hitting 999 fps needs a modern CPU
