AK-47 vs M4A1 in CS 1.6 — Which Rifle Is Better?

The classic Counter-Strike rivalry. AK-47 one-shot headshot vs M4A1 controllable recoil — full breakdown of damage, price, movement, spray patterns.

Updated: 2026-07-30

Counter-Strike 1.6's oldest debate: AK-47 for the Terrorists or M4A1 for the Counter-Terrorists — which is the better rifle? The honest answer is neither — they're balanced around each other, and the "right" one is decided by hitbox multipliers, price and playstyle.

If you're new: read the damage & hitboxes guide first. The AK-vs-M4 argument makes zero sense without knowing that head is ×4 and legs are ×0.75.

Quick comparison

The one-tap argument (the whole reason this rivalry exists)

The single biggest difference is what happens on a headshot against kevlar + helmet:

  • AK-47 — kills in one head-hit at any playable range. Full stop.
  • M4A1 — requires two head-hits against a helmet.

Since almost every buy round in competitive play, both teams have helmets, this asymmetry gives the AK a huge round-winning ceiling. Land one pixel-perfect flick and the round ends.

The M4 pays for its softer recoil with the loss of that one-shot ceiling. A skilled M4 player has to think in double-taps and bursts.

Recoil and spray control

Both rifles have a spray pattern — the first 4-6 bullets go where you aim, then the crosshair climbs and pulls sideways.

  • AK-47 — bullets 1-4 climb vertically. Bullets 5-30 sweep right, hard. To spray-control, hold the mouse down and left after the first 4 shots. AK spray is famously punishing to learn but devastating once mastered.
  • M4A1 — climbs vertically too, but the horizontal drift is much smaller and more centred. Easier to full-mag spray with acceptable results. Bad AK players die; bad M4 players occasionally get lucky.

For both weapons, first-shot accuracy is 100% while standing still and unmoved for ~200 ms. Move, jump, or crouch mid-burst and every bullet after the first widens dramatically. This is called the inaccuracy penalty.

Sound and stealth

The M4A1 has a silencer toggle (default key: alternate fire). Silenced M4:

  • Suppressed audio — much harder for enemies to locate you by ear
  • Roughly the same damage (the 1-2 point reduction is negligible in practice)
  • Slightly tighter first-shot accuracy on some CS 1.6 revisions

The AK-47 has no silencer. It's the loudest rifle in the game — every shot broadcasts your position across half the map. This is a real tactical liability on maps like de_train and de_nuke where sound tells stories.

Price and economy

The M4 is $600 more expensive than the AK. That's not free money — a full-buy CT with M4 + helmet + kevlar + defuse kit + full nades costs about $4,850. A full-buy T with AK + helmet + kevlar + full nades costs about $4,200.

Over a 15-round half, that $600 gap adds up. CT-side eco decisions are subtly tighter as a result.

Ammo economy is the same: 30/90 for both. If you're spraying, you'll be reloading behind cover in the same 4-second window either way.

Movement

The M4 lets you strafe about 4% faster than the AK (230 vs 221 units/sec). In practice this changes almost nothing — the AWP-holder in the corner will still headshot you either way. But on long rotations from bombsite A to B on de_train, that 4% is a noticeable half-second saved.

When each rifle shines

Pick the AK when:

  • You're playing an eco round where you need round-winning damage per bullet
  • You're in a duel where whoever taps head first wins — the AK gives you a ceiling
  • You're spraying groups (multi-kills through smoke, close-range 1v3s)

Pick the M4 when:

  • You need controllable full-mag spray (holding an angle where enemies push)
  • You're using stealth (silenced M4 on cs_office kills without giving your position away)
  • You're on a save round and want the softer recoil to make the most of a low-skill defensive spot

In competitive play

Historically, elite CTs in CPL / ESWC / IEM CS 1.6 tournaments preferred the M4 for its full-mag consistency. Elite Ts leaned AK for the one-shot ceiling. Neither side switched.

Interestingly, some CT-side players in the mid-2000s bought the AK on save rounds (dropping the M4A1 to a teammate). The reasoning: for eco / anti-eco rounds where you're trying to punish push attempts, the AK's one-shot potential is worth its lower cost.
